  1. In the Shadow of the Moonlight - The Awakening
In the Shadow of the Moonlight - The Awakening by J. J. Bidell

The characters in this book are lovable and awkward. A coming-of-age story about a girl destined to morph into a panther, we follow Naomi from her home to overseas and faraway United States where she'll complete a semester abroad in a sports program. While there, her destiny as a sometimes-feline is realized. Love, jealousy, intrigue pepper these pages and there is a good story here.

Technically, this book was translated from German ... and it shows. The unnatural affect of the dialogue bleeds into the characters, and I find myself viewing poor Naomi as an awkward foreigner. I think she is much more powerful than that, and I wished the translation could have included some further finesse.

Overall, though, this was a fun read, and I look forward to the next book in the series to follow up on what happens with these characters!

  2. The Reiki Man by Dominic C. JamesThe Reiki Man got me. I wasn't exactly sure how this adventure would go, or if there'd be a lot of technical information that would bore me to tears. But there wasn't, and I was pleased to be far from bored!

The adventure begins with us as witness to the murder of a well-known business man, and thus begins the roller-coaster ride. Mystery, ninjas, old love reigniting... This book is a lot of fun to read. I found myself learning, too, with so much information about the art of Reiki infused in the text. Of course, I am unsure of the validity of all the claims, but for now I'll tone down my critical eye.

If I had anything to critique about this book, it'd be that there are a few glaring technical errors. Some of the book appeared to have been completely passed over by the editors, and I was distracted by the poor grammar. This is brief, however, and does not persist. It does not detract from the book as a whole.

    Highly recommended!
